Pennsylvania Governor Rendell Proclaims April 22-28 Energy ...

April 18, 2007 -- HARRISBURG – Citing the state's commitment to conserve and reduce energy consumption in state-owned buildings, Pennsylvania Governor Edward G. Rendell has proclaimed April 22-28 as “Energy Conservation Week" in Pennsylvania.

The week will be highlighted by “Energy Expo 2007" on Thursday, April 26, in the Keystone Building Atrium, which is designed to provide public information about energy conservation methods.

“Conserving and reducing energy is a fundamental practice now embraced by each state agency," Governor Rendell said. “By using florescent instead of incandescent lighting, eliminating non-essential appliances, turning off power when it's not needed, and implementing standard office temperature set points, we've been able to reduce our energy consumption in state office buildings by nearly 10 percent last year alone."

Through a 2004 executive order, Energy Management and Conservation in Commonwealth Facilities, Governor Rendell placed the Department of General Services in charge of an energy management and conservation campaign for state-owned facilities.

How EL’s traffic signals co-ordinate

Hah! There are no robots in the city, unless you are referring to the traffic light signals which flash green, amber and red at many intersections.

How often have you stopped in front of flashing, out-of-order traffic lights and have wanted to contact the traffic department to sort it out because its inconveniencing you and hundreds of other drivers queuing behind you?

East Londons Traffic Management and Signage engineer, Alphonso Arendse assured the GO! that his department is the first to know when any of their signals are not working.

At each set of traffic light signals theres a traffic controller programme running with the date, day, type and time, which is fed back through the system to us.

It even knows when the day is a public holiday, Arendse explained.

New York Observed Kurt From the Block

THE morning after Kurt Vonneguts death on April 11, I walked past his town house, which is on East 48th Street between Second and Third Avenues. Although a cold, driving rain was falling, people had stuck folded notes and letters into the seam of the double door none of which, I imagined, would be readable because of the weather. A single frosted globe-lamp was lighted on the parlor floor, as if left on for the anonymous visitors. The next morning, a clear and sunny one, four bouquets of flowers were draped on the stoops flight of steps.

For years, I have lived two blocks away from Mr. Vonneguts home, and I saw him regularly sitting on those front steps with Flour, his fluffy white dog, beside him or walking Flour in Dag Hammarskjold Plaza, where he sat with a cigarette on a bench and read the newspaper.
